Alex Miller

Alex Miller is the William B. Stokely Professor of Management and the Associate Dean for Executive Education at the University of Tennessee.  He received his BS from Tennessee Tech (summa cum laude), his MBA from Dartmouth (Tuck Scholar), and his PhD from the University of Washington (youngest person to ever have received a UW doctorate in business.)  Since receiving his doctorate, he has completed additional coursework at MIT, Harvard, and Cal Tech. 

Alex is the author of Strategic Management (3rd ed.) as well as more than 30 journal articles. He has won five teaching awards and has been the principal investigator on more than 20 research grants. He was the Citibank Visiting Scholar to India, a Visiting Research Professor at the Cranfield Institute of Technology in England, and an Academic Research Fellow with the Strategic Planning Institute of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Alex has consulted with over 100 organizations ranging from Fortune 500 manufacturing firms to small non-profit service organizations. 

His current research interests are focused on strategic management in the aerospace defense industry.  As part of this work, he was the founder of the Aerospace Defense Clearinghouse at Tennessee (AD TN) and the founding director of the Aerospace Executive MBA program, the only program of its kind in the US. He is a regular speaker at national conferences for the aerospace-defense industry. 

Alex is a seventh generation East Tennessean and the father of four.  He and his wife live on their cattle farm in New Market, Tennessee.  He was the Tennessee Cattleman’s Association’s 2002 Outstanding Beef Producer of the Year.  His avocations are training border collies, endurance bicycling, and flying.  Alex is an IFR-rated pilot.

Alex was the founder of the Aerospace MBA program, the first accredited MBA program to focus exclusively on the aerospace industry. His current research is looking at ways of rebuilding the business case for aerospace given the tremendous challenges facing the industry.

Dr. Miller teaches in the Executive MBA Programs, Aerospace MBA, Senior Executive MBA, and Lean Enterprise Systems Design Institute.
